Meet Marika
Dr. Marika Morris
Drawing on 30 years of public policy research experience and over a decade of community-based research experience, Dr. Marika Morris brings to every project passion, research, communications and training experience with government, business, Indigenous organizations, labour and not-for-profit organizations.
marika (at) marika-morris-consulting.org
She started her career with a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Undergraduate Research Award which allowed her to work as a research assistant to Dr. Lise Paquet, designing and conducting experiments in human perception and cognition. She worked as a policy analyst in the Government of Canada, as a researcher/legislative assistant to two Canadian Members of Parliament, and a research, communications and evaluation consultant until one of her clients offered her an ideal job she couldnât refuse â as Research Coordinator for the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women (CRIAW).
In that position, Marika developed research strategies, managed national research projects, led workshops across Canada for community organizations on how to do participatory action research to meet the needs of their communities, and translated academic research into fact sheets so the knowledge could be widely known and used. She left after five years to complete a Ph.D. in Canadian Studies at Carleton University, in the Policy, Economy, Society stream, funded through a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) doctoral fellowship.
Having given birth in the middle of the program, Marika thought going back to the stability of a government job was the answer, and became a Senior Policy Research Advisor in Research and Academic Relations at Public Safety Canada. There she managed two multi-million dollar research projects, gave an international presentation on evaluation methods for crime prevention initiatives, helped design Statistics Canadaâs Survey of Emergency Preparedness and Resilience, and managed an aspect of the federal governmentâs participation in Metropolis, a national and international network of academics, community organizations and policy-makers interested in migration and diversity.
After almost five years, Marika had to choose between that job and taking on a two-year Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) postdoctoral fellowship to do participatory research with Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada on violence prevention by and for Inuit youth. She chose the latter and never looked back, founding Marika Morris Consulting once the postdoc was successfully completed. Now Marika can devote her considerable skills to projects that matter to her.
Within her first year of business, Marika was proud to deliver a presentation to the United Nations in 2016 on women and leadership at an event cosponsored by Canada, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, and in her second year of business, accepted a 50 over 50 business award in 2017.
Team leader Marika Morris is a member in good standing of the Canadian Evaluation Society and is a member of Statistics Canadaâs Advisory Committee on Social Conditions, which advises the Chief Statistician. She is also an Adjunct Research Professor in the School of Canadian Studies [formerly Indigenous and Canadian Studies] at Carleton University, Ottawa.

Testimonials
Tracy O'Hearn, Executive Director
Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada
We have asked Dr. Morris to help us with many initiatives. She co-facilitated an important cross-sectoral meeting on Inuit child sexual abuse and developed a communications and action plan. She facilitated and gathered information from our Board of Directors of 14 Inuit women to obtain input for a GBA+ of UNDRIP and TRC Calls to Action. She prepared fact sheets for our Boardâs discussion of Pauktuutitâs role in the Murdered and Missing Women Inquiry. She conducted phone consultations with shelter workers and others across all four Inuit regions to feed into our Healing Strategy. She revised a training manual for Inuit shelter workers based on the recommendations of Inuit shelter directors. Marika asked to do her post-doctoral research with us, on a project we chose. During that time, she always made herself available to help us with other activities such as grant applications. Marika is a valuable resource for us in so many ways. I highly recommend her services.
Linda Baker, Ph.D., Learning Director
Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women & Children
Dr. Marika Morris has completed an independent evaluation of a provincial initiative and is currently evaluating a national initiative led by our Centre. Her professionalism and knowledge about evaluation methodology are excellent. She has a rare gift for adhering to the principles and rigors of evaluation while understanding the flexibility and creativity required to evaluate complex initiatives that do not lend themselves to randomized control trials. Her business models high standards of practice and makes a true contribution to the building of knowledge bases in Canada.
Lise Martin, Executive Director

Her ability to bring these two together in ways that speak to both policy makers and the people meant to benefit from enhanced policies is unique. She is an incredible listener who is devoted to her clients and their cause.
